Filthy house gets clean-up order A Richmond house that is so untidy and unsanitary it poses a health risk will be cleaned up after the Tasman District Council issued a cleansing order to the property’s occupiers. Council has the power to issue the cleansing order under the Health Act to the owners or occupiers of any house that is considered a danger to people’s health. Two weeks ago, council ordered the occupiers of a Richmond house to clean up their act - if the house is not cleaned up within a

certain time council will employ contractors to do the job. Environment and planning manager Dennis Bush-King says it is only the fourth time in 20 years he has issued a cleansing order. Sadly, Dennis says the owners of these houses are often experiencing some kind of mental or physical health issues and need help. “It’s not a common occurrence but it’s an extreme occurrence and there’s usually a story behind it,” he says. Dennis says council is usually contacted

conditions and vermin and that sort of thing, the council has the power to issue a cleansing order. ‘We give the home owner a certain period in which they have to respond - we don’t just drop it on them. If they fail to respond, council has the power to go and clean the place up and that’s a charge on the land owner. Dennis says the length of time given to clean up a property or house depends on the extent of the problem.

Ford fans to show off their wheels True-blue Nelsonians have a good excuse to take their pride and joys for a spin this Sunday when the Nelson Classic Ford Club holds its annual cruise out to Rabbit Island to celebrate Henry Ford’s birthday. The founder of the Ford Motor Company, Henry Ford was born on July 30, 1863, and every year the club invites all Ford owners to attend the birthday celebrations. Club member Tom Champion of Richmond says the event is always popular attracting around 100 Fords ranging from ancient Model Ts to the latest Ford Falcons. Although Tom admits he made a disastrous start to his car-owning life, buying a rusty Austin A30, he soon saw the light and bought the first of his many Fords. Tom, will be driving his latest acquisition, a pristine, blue 1965 Zodiac Mark III, out to Rabbit Island on Sunday.
